Any suggestions ?

The Wal-Mart or Best Buy 6DOF is a great buy at ~ $32. I guess I need to explain ! The Wii nunchuck and Motion plus for the Nitendo Wii game contain a 3axis accelerometer and 3 axis gyro. AND it is i2c to communicate to them! 4 wires ! power (3.3v), ground, i2c scl, and i2c sda ! Why mess with expensive thermophiles or other 6DOF units? The output is 14 bit ADC 'ed i2c bus ! Great resolution and a price you cant beat !

There is one problem by using a 3 axis gyro with a 3 axis accelerometer. It works great on stationary devices like the Wii but have a problem on a airplane. Here is why. All solid state gyros have drift. This can be overcome by having a longterm reference to correct the gyro like a GPS. Using an 3 axis accelerometer only works on a stationary device. When a plane is in a bank/turn the reference to ground change by gravity. A GPS can be used because the plane is moving and will give a heading. It is a nice idea and cheap. Lates price < $20.

Perman.

MLX90614

There is an all-digital thermopile from Melexis MLX90614 that gives you temperature compensated, calibrated and user configurable filtered infrared measurement. Unfortunately the digital I2C interface speed does not seem to be fast enough for our purpose. The sensor sometimes gives no or wrong temperature information if polled. Any help appreciated!
